Most Wanted

I selected this suspect from a list of twenty one potential candidates, this suspect is accused of several high profile crimes that have made national news outlets. I therefore believed that finding information on this suspect  would be easier due to the coverage that they have received. I will be anonymising the investigation at each stage. However the reader can still see how the investigation is conducted and the progress that I have made. Please view a time line of the investigation below.

Visualising Locations with a Obsidian

Gathering publicly available information about this suspect is proving challenging, further social media searches did not provide any readily available information. I have therefore pivoted the investigation into visualising the suspect's potential environment. The suspect is accused of four crimes, in four differing locations, three are within the southern perimeter of a city and one is in another city. I therefore began to plot the latitude and longitude coordinates for the crime locations, two were quite close at approximately 240 metres apart. I therefore concluded that there may be some relativity to this location, however that is currently conjecture. Focussing on the southern area of this city I have plotted around 60 locations of interest. These include the site of the accused offences and potential places of employment, earlier evidence although not currently verified, indicated someone with the suspect's name was working in retail. I have therefore recorded similar retail outlets in this vicinity. Visualising this data on a map within Obsidian has permitted me to visualise the sites of the accused offences and the proximity of the potential sources of employment. The map plug in for Obsidian, provides an invaluable tool, where the latitude and longitude coordinates can be entered on separate notes with unique tags for each note. The investigator can allocate specific colours and icons to each plot marker. This makes viewing and analysing the data quicker and clearer, as one can discern just from the colour and icon of the plot marker what it represents. I have taken the closest three potential places of employment and begun to investigate them to see if there are any direct or familial links to the suspect. After investigating these, via Companies' House website, there appears to be no direct or familial links, however the details have been recorded and links may appear later when more intelligence is gathered. I will now work in an expanding radius, checking each potential place of employment for links to the suspect. I presume if the suspect is still in the UK with their family, they will need a source of income, that is my rationale for searching for places where the suspect could earn money.

Social Media Search

This morning, I conducted a thorough search of social media for this suspect, made more complicated by the suspect having five aliases which also had to be checked. To speed this process up I use Google Dorking with site specific searches. I alternate between all results and image results, looking for a text or visual reference. Unfortunately after searching six popular social media sites, the results were inconclusive. As a precaution I check a Russian social media site VK.com which is the Russian equivalent to Facebook. I have sometimes found persons using this site, who have been banned or de-platformed from the common sites. This outcome suggests that the suspect may not be using common social media sites, this is unsurprising as they are currently wanted by the police and failed to answer his bail. There may be a chance that the suspect is using Telegram, however that site proves difficult to search. When a suspect cannot be traced directly through a social media account, I do not give up. My next focus will be to identify someone connected to the suspect, identify their social media account and then search for the suspect as follower. In the mean time I will be updating the investigation with known sites of interest that are relevant to the location of where the suspect has lived or is known.

Social Media Search

Since the local authority document and subsequent Companies House search proved inconclusive I have now pivoted to trying to identify if the suspect is a social media user and on which platforms. This evening I began with X, I begin by searching for the user's name, if that is not successful then I try their aliases. In this instance the suspect appears to have quite a common name and I cannot identify a match, one potential match was discounted when a facial analysis revealed a low probability of a match. I will now pivot to Facebook, followed by Instagram and then TikTok.

Companies House Search

Searching the Companies House' website is one of the best sources of intelligence. Businesses can be identified, associates are listed and dates of birth can frequently be cross referenced. The business owner whom submitted the official local authority document is listed as a company owner in the same region as the suspect. In this instance the Companies House search was disappointing, with no clear links. It should be noted the business owner whom submitted the document and the owner listed in Companies House cannot yet be verified as the same. However the business address was noted along with its latitude and longitude coordinates for reference later.

Google Dorking Result

A Google Dorking search result, reveals the suspect's name on an local authority .pdf document. It should be noted that currently this is just a co-incidence and the person named in the document may just share the same name as the suspect. The document reveals, the region is the same as the suspect's last known location, the person has been banned as being an employee of a business. Further revelations include the name of the person submitting the document and this could indicate a relationship between the applicant and the suspect.

Making links with other known criminals.

From the original government source, I make Obsidian notes about other known wanted criminals in the same region as the suspect. I presume that in serious crime there may be some casual communal links. I also note the types of crimes committed by those suspects, in this instance they include, violence, murder and drugs. Links are made between the listed suspects and the type of crime that they have committed. By doing this, links may appear and Obsidian offers a very good visualisation tool 'Graph View' where inter-connected nodes/topics can be visualised and filtered.

Case Opened Using Obsidian

I commence the investigation by creating a note dedicated to the suspect in Obsidian. I fill in template which includes as much known information as possible about the suspect. Name, latest image, estimated age, gender, build, hair colour, nationality, aliases, and relevant notes. In this instance there are questions over the suspects location and due to the relevant offences taking place at differing locations, so I therefore created a table to record the locations, latitude and longitude coordinates.

Identified the suspect from Government Source

From a government source of most wanted suspects, the suspect was selected from a list of twenty one. The suspect is accused of several notable criminal offences. The suspect's actions have made the national news and therefore it was believed that it would be easier to find information on this suspect because of the level of reporting. Due to the offences taking place in differing geographical locations it is also an opportunity to work with geo data such as latitude and longitude coordinates and plotting.
