Productivity and Data Visualisation: This basic app permits users to plot latitude and longitude coordinates on an offline map (.html file) to perform data analysis and data visualisation.

This simple console based app is a tool for efficiently plotting latitude and longitude coordinates on an offline map for data analysis and visualisation. A data analyst or intelligence analyst for the National Crime Agency (NCA) may want to plot these to create a visual document, to identify patterns, locations, boundaries and territories of known wanted criminals. The app in its simplest form can plot the coordinates, however it can be expanded where lines can be drawn between the plots and for further functionality and analysis heat maps can be created. In this example I have taken a simple dataset provided by Dav Wheat (please see all credits at the bottom of the page). That data was provided in .CSV format, I split the data into columns, I want the latitudinal and longitudinal data. Once that has been separated into individual columns, I make a note of the cell ranges as this will be needed later. In the App, the user is required to copy the excel file into the project, then when prompted is requested to:

  1. Specify the name of the file where the data is held.

  2. Specify a name of the output map file (the destination directory is set within the app)

  3. Specify the cell ranges for the Latitudinal Data

  4. Specify the cell ranges for the Longitudinal Data

The app then automatically plots the coordinates, writes the file to the specified directory and then opens it for the user. Further functionality would include a menu system so the user can specify what options they wish to enact, such as creating a map, creating a heatmap, drawing a line between plots and lastly calculating the distance between plots or from a fixed reference point. This method is more efficient and can handle more than the 2000 coordinate limit that exists in Google My Maps.

The app prompts the user to enter the information about where the data is held and the GPS coordinates to centre the map correctly.

The app will produce a .html file in a directory of your choice which can be opened in a web-browser such as Chrome. In this instance I have focused on the city of Manchester as an example.

Please watch a demonstration of the App below.

In this video I demonstrate how the app, will take latitude and longitudecoordinates from an Excel file and plot them in an offline .HTML file for data analysis and visualisation.
